Projects to consider for 2013

Welcome to 2013, already in progress.


Usability tests of popular online activity trackers

This would be mainly geared towards biking, although my recent interest in running may change the focus a bit. Issues to consider:
  1. Integration with other activity/health sites (EveryMove, FitBit, Withings, etc)
  2. Integration with social media.
  3. Data upload ease (see below)
  4. Data manipulation once uploaded (cropping routes, tweaking, etc)
Data upload tests:
  1. Upload single new track from Garmin 500, sole device
  2. Upload multiple new tracks from Garmin 500, sole device
  3. Upload old/new track mix from Garmin 500, sole device
  4. Repeat #1, #2, and #3, but with iPhone also attached
  5. Maybe try the same with some new yet-to-be-purchased runner's GPS?

Reverse engineer Android's offline Google Maps feature

And if this is sucessful...

Create "biker's GPS" for Nexus 7 (Rando-droid?)

  • Keep current location on-screen at all times
  • Keep display on
  • Use offline maps to avoid need for constant data connection
  • Track logging to GPX file
  • Integrate with Dropbox, Garmin Connect, etc?
  • Allow map overlay of existing (multiple?) routes/tracks

Learn VIM really well

Because it is the one true editor.

Learn GDB really well

Even the best of us need to debug occasionally.

Build new home computer system

  1. Modern Intel CPU, as fast as possible
  2. USB 3
  3. At least 16G RAM (with clear path to 32G)
  4. SSD storage for OS
  5. Possible SSD storage for VMs
  6. HDD for bulk storage
  7. Current system becomes home server, possibly WiFi router
  8. Reasonably fast/capable video card (whatever has best Linux support)

From CD boot sector to Linux login prompt. It should be a "DIY live Linux CD" how-to.


Miscellaneous Geek


  • Write Linux "Hello World" without using any runtime (no glibc, etc)


Fitness Goals


  • Get down to square (34x34) pants
  • 3650 miles/year
  • Run 10K in < 40 minutes
  • 15% body fat as measured by DEXA scan
  • 100 pushups
  • 200 squats
